LC PDS NICs work well... so do CommSlot ones.

Definately need to replace the LC040. NetBSD has floating point emulator
issues on the 040.

You don't need to "patch" current, though. They are less than a couple of
weeks away from the release of NetBSD 1.6 (already at Beta1). It will
include the IDE support (though I don't know if it will be in the default
kernel... I really should look).

Yes and no. The 630s and their brethern implemented a sort of "plug-in"
architecture. The only internal tap for the SCSI bus is the CD-ROM bay. To
connect that, you need a set of adapters which plug onto the drive's
connectors and mate with a matching slot at the back of the bay. IIRC,
someone did sell an adapter to let you install a SCSI hard drive, but at the
cost of the internal CD-ROM.

I've used Asante and MacSense LC PDS cards and an Apple comm slot card with
no problems. The former were seen with the 'ae' (Apple Ethernet) driver, the
latter with the 'sn' (Sonic) driver. The issue is more one of chipset than
bus.

I was lucky, my 630 from the swaplist came with a full 040 already. :-)
