Hi Dean,

I have used, to some success, many of the following
apps, it will all boil down to how much digging online
and/or or buying you're willing to do and your
external requirement needs.

Word Processors, etc.

On the shareware side, I have used Wordperfect 3.5 and
Nisus compact (the two free downloadable versions
offered).

Clariworks 2, 3, 4 and Appleworks 5: each version
becomes more compatible and functional, but the
trade-off is more hd space and ram hungry. All-in-one
and ease-of-use.

MS Word 5.1 and 6.0 (the faster updated version): the
trade-offs are application speed and smaller app and
docs with 5.1a (added shareware color toolbar for
updated looks as well as another update to read word 6
and 95 versions of word)

6.0 offers more compatibility with newer versions of
word (added an update to read word 97 files: it did a
fair job on simpler word files).

An often overlooked wp I used to enjoy was WriteNow:
very compact (all versions), could read-write rtf
files for import/export jobs and very low ram
requirements; I often used it in a boot ram disk w/
system 7.1, the app and file (backing-up to hd). It
was a speed-demon (coded in assembler language). Cons:
It's outdated.

Fullwrite: another good wp used by some of my old
clients. Don't have too many specs on that one.

Microsoft Works for Mac; next.

Mariner Write (shareware): This one also worked fast
and small and may still be updated by the author.

PDF's: If your external parties need readable as well
as printable versions (but not to edit) get the tool
that creates pdfs from your printjobs; it's actually a
chooser printer extension called print to pdf. Very
simple and easy to use and very affordable shareware.

Databases: Filemaker Pro is a much enhaced db than
Clarisworks built-in one, highly recommended. Up to
version 4 iirc.

Contact managers: I used Act! 3.0 on windows at work
and liked some of the features. Con: Outdated and
forces you to use built-in wp iirc, but works good on
our aged quads (I got the 3.5 for Mac).

None of the shareware pims stood out really, and the
Now Contact and Up-to-Date pack seem to be the Mac
favorites; I don't have any exp. on those, though.

Spreadsheets: Excel 4 is good; Claris/Appleworks
built-in are okay. Bi Plane and Mariner (shareware)
are nice; Mariner seems a little more robust of the 2
and I think may still be updated (check macupdate.com
and pure-mac.com).

I'm sure I'm missing some. I haven't covered the image
editor/draw/DTP apps, many bundled with old scanners
like PhotoShop LE, the full version (all versions up
to 4.0), Color It!, ImageConverter (very capable
editor/conversion shareware), CorelDraw (was a free
download), etc.

This is a couple of links to some older shareware apps
on-line:

These are just the few that came to mind; let me know
if you'd like more info or links on any of these apps
or for more apps and the 411's on them.

Hope that helps!
Craig
