For Tex-Edit Plus, just get a spell checker to use with Tex-Edit Plus, there are a couple of choices one good one that is free is Excalibur, not free but a very good spell checker is Spellswell Plus 2.1.4. both would run on an older Mac. :-} The advantage to using Spellswell is that it uses Word Services which Tex-Edit Plus does have, so it checks Tex-Edit Plus files automatically once Tex-Edit Plus is configured to use Spellswell Plus.
