I finally got my mac networked to my PC through ftp! Yea! Now I can transfer
more than a floppy across. I also got Netscape 4.08 installed and working
but need to figure out proxy setting.

In my search for software I found "Apple Specs" but I'm finding conflicting
info. I was wondering how accurate the info in here is. According to the
Specs I've got this:
MAC LC 580
68LC040, 66Mhz CPU
32-bit, 33Mhz Data Path (Bus)
Max ram 52Mb in 2 72-pin SIMMs
Addressing Mode: 32-bit
Original System SW: 7.5
Supports: 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6, 7.6.1*, 8.0
*currently installed

500 MB IDE HD (Apple System Profiler reports I actually have a 346.8MB HD)
Supports 2x CDROM (I currently do not have, but would like to get one)

Pickle: you recomended dropping back down to 7.1. Would that pose any
problems? And from what I've been finding, it most internet apps work on
7.5.5 and above. Since that is goal I've almost reached, would this still be
advisable? Upgrading the RAM is going to happen within a week or 2 and I'm
going to max it out (so I can turn off virtual memory). Would this be a
factor in the OS I run? Also in regards to the 32-bit addressing unable to
be turned off, would booting on a MacOS 6.x (on a floppy only) work for the
older programs? Or is the above supported OS's pretty much what I have to
pick from? Or using vMac would work?

With the HD being IDE, I could easily upgrade this to a larger HD (up to 2
GB I believe) but would it be worth it? I can see myself getting lots of
apps and such, but I can use my PC for storage (eventual goal: file
sharing/browsing).

My next question, if anyone is familiar with ftp and file transfering is
this:
I've got a basic, no frills ftp server on my PC, and I got Anarchie 1.40 on
the Mac. It seems to work great, but about half of the files I attempt to
transfer across I get an "Invalid Lenth (-23006)" error in Anarchie. It seem
to transfer bin files ok, (although a couple failed) but hqx file are not
working at all. I've got StuffIt on the PC as well, and it unstuffs them
fine, but the resulting files usually give the same error. For hqx files is
there something I'm missing for downloading them? Everything I've seen says
transfer as Binary and that's what I'm doing but I'm at a loss on this one.
Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

J Watson
