Itchy send finger syndrome strikes again.

Since you're not getting a start up chime, but were when you found this
machine, I'd say your problems are in one (or more) of five areas: RAM,
VRAM, NuBus cards, the monitor you have attached to your 840, or the
logic board settings.

You can use any 72-pin SIMMs, EDO or FPM, from 8 to 32 MB, provided
they are 60 ns or faster and are CAS-before-RAS. As with all slots on
the Q840 logic board, it is not a simple matter to get the RAM seated
properly.

There is 1 MB of VRAM soldered to the logic board. You can add 4 256 KB
VRAM SIMMs, 80 ns or faster, for a total of 2 MB. When you added VRAM
SIMMs, they were the correct ones for your 840, yes? And, when you
removed them, you pulled all four?

You've never mentioned having any NuBus cards (including things like
the various Video Spigots). You don't have any connected, do you?

Although the Q840 is supposed to support all Apple monitors, I'm not so
sure about 14-inch RGBs. I'd say a properly adapted VGA monitor is a
better bet. You may want to try leaving the monitor powered off when
you power up your 840 and see if you get a chime, that way. If so, wait
20 or 30 seconds and then turn on the monitor.

Lastly, you said that you'd reset the logic board by leaving it without
PRAM battery for at least 10 minutes and then put in a known good
battery delivering 3.2 or more volts. Did you do this before or after
your last change to the RAM/VRAM configuration? If before, reset it
again, then start up with the monitor off and listen for a chime. If no
chime, try one more time with the monitor on.
