Just a little something to designate the folder, which often has an otherwise
identical name as the application it contains.

Grab an old-school Macs for Dummies book at a used bookstore for a couple
bucks.  The great thing about the Mac OS is it's been virtually static since
System 6 as far as overall interface and keyboard shortcuts, so even a
more-recent book will give you a pretty good idea.
