Moving forward the VTL will only support adding whole disks and not partitions. The VTL does not do a good well in differentiating partitions and whole disk and has cause other issues (for example multipath disk detections). For SCSI disks (/dev/sdb /dev/sdc etc) it should be ok. There is no real advantage in partitions in your case since all of these belong to the same storage pool and the same can be achieved by LVM.
For the issue you are facing, 1.
