If there is only a coupe of cms in it, it should be fine. Easy enough to test though. Mark the piston at the normal resting position then measure to full extent to get the travel. If there is only 2cm left already then no joy.
If the spring were too long then the GAZ shock will be resting on it's internal bump stop*, going over an upwards bump is not so much of a problem, going over a hole is though. *I seem to recall the GAZ shocks have internal bump stops. I'm often hitting my external bump stops on compression (need stiffer springs). Now if you had a set of XR2 front coil-overs I'd be very interested!
