Pops are usually fuel/carb related, bangs are more worrying Have you got fuel+spark?

Got completely fed up & bought a set of mk2 gauges from eBay, which I've put in today. After recharging the battery & reconnecting it I couldn't get the Clifford alarm to stop blasting my eardrums off, so I unplugged the control box. Peace at last. The only sound to be heard was the 1.8 Ferriday engine throbbing through the Ashley exhaust & a big grin appeared as the Q moved again after a couple of months rest. Satisfied the new clocks were working I reconnected the alarm module & attached the speedo cable, wired in a couple of warning lights for the front & rear fogs. Alarm kept setting itself & locking & unlocking the doors & I threw a wobbler & pulled it out again. Fastened the clocks in so I could go for a proper drive to check the speedo & tried to start her up & was quickly disappointed. She turned over but wouldn't start & I heard a loud "POP" from the engine bay. Still turn's over & won't start & now I'm scared I've done something major. Anyone got any ideas?
