The only time I have had a ridiculously rich mixture on my H4 1800 Zetec was when a door harness chaffed through and spiked the ECU on my way to work - the cloud of white HC was visible for miles. Luckily a revision of the wiring and a total reset (Battery disconnected) got me back on the road again. 9 years later I have had no further problems.
The fact that you have fuel suggests that the ECU is at least doing something as this could be the first major issue - Geoff Ward had this problem as far as I remember when first trying to start his Extreme. Needless to say that it is necessary to make a thorough check that all the sensors are connected and working. A total no-start can normally be attributed to: a.. Crankshaft sensor not working - a failed cam sensor will let the engine start but it will run lumpily b.. Coil pack not working - have you really eliminated this??? c.. Lack of fuel - you have an excess d.. Lock-out by the ECU due to other critical sensors not working but this normally cuts the fuel e.. PATS system lock-out, again no fuel as it cuts power to the fuel pump Your idea of a fault code check is a very reasonable starting point but expensive if no fault is found - I had this problem on my Beauford where no fault was registered but in fact the MAP sensor was caput. Where are you situated? You might be able to borrow a fault code reader from another member. Be aware that if the battery has been disconnected, the Keep Alive Memory (KAM), which stores all the optimum settings for your engine, is lost and so the ECU has to learn those optimum settings again - fast idle on start up for about 1 min followed by ~ 5 mile run to allow the neural net to set itself up again. This feature does not normally prevent a start however but sets the idle mixture to run very rich. Been there, done that! My ECU is in the cab at the top of the passenger side footwell and the black triangular three pin fault code reader socket should be somewhere near to that, depending upon what harness was used - look for a socket with a red cap pushed into it. Good luck, Hamish ----- Original Message ----- From: Critter To: Quantum Owners Group Sent: Monday, November 30, 2009 10:41 AM Subject: [Quantum Owners] H4 Not Starting Hi All, This is my first post on this forum guys so be gentle. I have recently purchased a H4 with a 1.8 Zetec engine and although the previous owner sold it at a price to replace the engine I'm still not conviced it needs it. Apparently the head gasket blew and the head was removed, skimmed and pressure tested, I have double checked the timing and the compression and both are ok and there is a spark on all leads. The injectors appear to be flooding the cylinders as when a spark plug is removed you can not only smell the fuel but if a torch is shone down the bores you can see it reflected on the top of the pistons. After looking on the net I suspected the camshaft sensor and as it is a cheap replacement I swopped it for a new one but still have the same result. Has anyone any other suggestions?, I could check the wiring to the EECIV or possibly buy one of those cheap error code readers, has anyone had any experience with these ? and also where would the EECIV be mounted on a H4. Any clues to any of the above please help. Many Thanks in Advance Trevor -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Quantum Owners Group" group.
