Thanks, Andy, Jim and John.
Always useful to hear from people who've actually done the conversion.
It certainly sounds as if it would be a safer/quicker route than my
proposed Pug conversion with all its unknowns.
That said, I'd obviously take the opportunity to revamp a lot of the
rest of the car as well. It gets damp inside (possibly door seals,
probably boot seal, certainly rear window), and it's been suffering
electrical gremlins, so I might just try a complete loom swap (maybe
using the Mondeo loom).
This loom has been hacked about for the ERST installation, and I don't
want to compound the problems with further modifications for a diesel
lump.
The engine would be from an R reg, so only a year later than yours.
But N-P was a changeover year, as I found out when I had to change the
cam belt; not many of the diagrams matched the Haynes manual and the
instruction to remove the alternator was found to be both difficult and
unnecessary (afterwards).
Andy, which "lip" is it that needs modifying? Are we talking about at
the bottom/front of the bay? As long as it's not one of the structural
parts at the sides of the bay, it sounds straightforward enough.
What happens with the fuel tank. Does the diesel injection pump have
integral swirl pot? Could I fit a normal Fiesta tank in place of the
injection one I have now?
Does the intercooler need to be moved from its position at the top/rear
of the engine bay? It's pretty high there, must be fairly close to the
bonnet.
And did you retain the original air box/filter?
55mpg is about what I would expect from this engine in a Q, so seeing
figures up to 62mpg is a real bonus. That would cut my fuel costs in
half.
Tony.
