There was a kit magazine write up in the early days where a 2+2 nearly failed SVA because the brake lights were innermost. As deemed to be too far in from the edge of the car. Until the inspector checked a Ford Sierra in the local car park. Decision changed - Result!

I will check later but i'm pretty sure that the Sierra lights were wired with the rear fog and sidelight on a dual bulb and the brake light on another single bulb. I used the rear of the Sierra wiring loom and i'm sure that was how it was connected.

My 2+2 was originally wired with the tail lights and brake lights on the same bulb. My assumption is that this is how it was wired when it was built and therefore it passed sva and numerous MOT's like that. I didn't like it that way and am a firm believer in as much visible light as possible when the brakes are applied. As a result I now have the brake lights wired so they operate as before with the addition of the lamps nearest the numberplate. The fog lights are now wired to the bright filament on the taillamp bulb and operate independently of the brake lights, i.e. when the fog lights are switched on it is just the inner lamps acting as brake lights. It passed its last MOT wired this way. This method of wiring IS CONTRARY to the construction and use regulations regarding vehicle lighting but personally I have had no problem either with the MOT or the police and my Q is used daily and in 2 different police areas. To achieve this I have a relay connected across the wiring for the fog light switch which is triggered by the brake light switch. Simple and effective but I must warn again that this is not a legal way to wire the lamps.

Yes, thats correct operation of the 2+2 rear lights.
There are some rules about the positions and operation of the rear lights which you may find you are now breaking.

As you have it now you don't have sidelights visible when you press the brake pedal.
