The cambelt broke on a relatives 1.6 Pinto, and I was called in to rescue - After much too-ing and fro-ing with a local parts place which insisted on looking at the back of the packet instead of comparing the length of the belt within I eventually
fitted it at the roadside at 23:00. All was well thereafter.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but memory tells me that the 1.6
Pinto is an interference engine, though the 2.0 isn't.

A cam belt break on a 1.6 will almost certainly have bent valves, but
you might be lucky. Odds are though that it's just one cylinder - you
may find that sliding a belt on will at least get you moving, though
you might not want to rev it!

Hi Andrew,
Worst case scenario - a bent valve, but if it's a stock 1.6 engine
without a high lift cam or big valves it's probably not damaged. Get
a new belt and fit it and time the cam in according to the Haynes
manual, then start her up... (after checking she turns over by hand of
course). If it doesn't run right do a compression test to check the
valves are ok. Alternatively, and more cheaply as you don't have to
buy a compression tester, when you fit the belt take the cam cover off
and check the valve clearances with a feeler gauge - that will show if
any of the valves are bent as any that are won't seat and you'll get a
huge clearance. And while the cover's off why not adjust them at the
same time.

My guess is it will be fine.

Good luck. Plenty of time before Stoneleigh.
