Ian, 2.5 turns is 360 degrees two and a half times.

This is just a start point and each choke will need adjusting for the best 
mixture.

Even though mine spits and in theory is running lean, a friend and myself have 
a theory that it is actually too rich but there is insufficient air speed to 
keep all the mixture in suspension and the dropped fuel weakens the mixture. I 
am going to try a slightly  leaner idle jet with more air corrector holes.

What idle jets do you have in and what size choke are you on? 

I have a copy of a jetting program I can mail you off list if it would help.
