Chris,

Checking the run out with the wheels installed on the car will tell you a bit 
more.  If the wheel “barrels” then either the shaft is bent, the flange is not 
true or as Jim says the wheel might not be torqued up correctly and no amount 
of balancing will correct this; it would be more likely to be felt at most 
speeds.  If it runs true in one plain but is eccentric then this will give 
uneven tyre wear and frequency related shimmy so back to the wheel centre 
inserts.

Presumably you have moved the wheels around the car to see if it follows 
specific wheels?

One final thought, do you have wheel spacers?  If so are they parallel?  Do you 
have positional washers/bushes on the studs to set the spacer concentric with 
the wheel?  With my 15” wheels + 5 mm spacers I found that the positional 
washers/bushes were not sitting fully home and were causing the spacer to sit 
out and make the wheel barrel – this was instantly noticeable when spinning the 
wheel before removing the jack and trying it on the road.

Thanks for the thoughts.

 

The vibration has been there since I bought the car 4 years ago. The last time 
I had the balanced the wheels were check by eye on the balancing machine and 
all 4 were found to be slightly buckled, but there is no sign of kerb or 
pothole damage to the rims. They do have the plastic inserts to ensure they are 
aligned on the hubs. The new wheels also have similar plastic inserts and fit 
very snugly on to the centre of the hubs. As I said before I hoped that 
replacing the buckled wheels with new ones would get rid of the vibration. I’m 
now thinking, as Hamish suggested, that perhaps the drive shaft is unbalanced 
or bent. This may have caused the buckled wheels.

 

I’ve found a couple of places where I can get new CV Joints, but no one has 
complete drive shafts.

Jon could be right, if you haven't checked they are really snug fit it could be 
worth checking. Strangely 2 off Carole's wheels an extra sort of ring thing to 
make the bit that fits over the spigot and 2 have been machined to fit 
perfectly as they are. When one of the special rings went missing some time 
during a tyre replacement

to a front wheel the vibration between about 55 to 70mph was very noticeable. 
fortunately i found a suitable replacement and the problem completely 
disappeared. Good luck hope you find the cure.

Has anyone got any usable XR2 driveshafts and front hubs I can buy?

I have a bad vibration between 50 and 70mph. I've changed the brake discs,
tyres, & wheels and they have been balanced many times. So time for more
drastic measures.

Also DCNFs fit better in the XR2/Quantum engine bay. the DCOEs end up very
or hard against the subframe at the bulkhead.
