....unless you are stuck in a modern 4x4 and then you want to give lots of revs 
to spin the wheels so that electronic diffs and TC kicks in.  

Personally I keep my all season tyres on my day to day car. I don't have room 
for extra sets of wheels and too tight to pay anyone to store them for me. I 
simply drive to the conditions and avoid driving in bad conditions (I'm lucky I 
don't have to be in an office every day and have the choice of a seat ibiza 
which is a nose heavy engined FWD diesel, using the 'manual diff lock trick' 
I've not got it stuck even in thick snow). I won't take the BMW or Quantum out 
when the weather is getting bad. 

The scientific proof is there though, winter tyres stop you in a shorter 
distance 3-4meters at 30mph I recall.  However don't suddenly start thinking 
you can drive faster than everyone else cus you've got your super gripers on.  
The 4x4 overtaking you might have mud or snow tyres on....
