It seems weird, but to get the best from the 'real time 4x4' on my CRV in snow, I turn the anti skid system off. Although it works well in the wet and dry and uses the ABS and engine management to control wheel spin, it is this very wheel spin that causes the difference in speed between front and back axles that engages the rear wheels and makes it a 4x4...
I've not got big and chunkies but they are rated M&S. A very reasurring car to drive.
