Yes there could be a connection as if the bearing was that loose the first 
action of your brakes would be to try and pull everything into line. This would 
gives an odd feel to the brakes indeed. 

Watch out for using mole grips on brake pipes as the sharp edges of the grips 
can damaged the brake pipes. You can get special grips with rounded profiles 
especially for this job from halfrauds or a motor factors.
