Damn I do not know why I never twigged this problem of yours, you were suffering pad kick off which is the disc wobbling and pushing the pads back so that when you want to brake the master cylinder has to fill the space left in the caliper before pushing on to the disc. It is common when racing and on track days (I actually make Dolomite vented brake kits because their brakes are awful) to have to pump the brakes as you go down a straight after severe cornering. MX5 calipers have little springs fitted to push the pads back on to the disc (cunning Japs).
