I'm guessing it's running the 1.6 injection inlet manifold then but i doubt if
it's still running the 1.6 ECU, not without a superchip or a remap.
Can you see the ecu to get any ID off it ?

First we need to work out what system it's running, then you can get the
appropriate manual.

I'm out of the house at present, But its injected with EFi written on it, so
Ford by the look of it. The 'distributor' section is very different from our
other Q's with carbs, so a coil pack. The previous owner was a bit vague about
the origin of the engine and it was changed to a 2L on the V5 (It had been a
1400 cc!) when I took ownership at one stage I thought it was a Fariday 1900 cc
but it seems not. (It had been a 1400 cc!) All that said it runs better each
time I take it out and sounds very nice.

I would like to know more about the EFi system as I am new to it. Any
suggestions for books or other useful info? Would e.g.and XR3i Haynes manual
cover useful stuff or be misleading?

Yes, the 1.8 in the Sierra was the biggest in the UK but it's also quite

You might have a overbored and sleeved 1.6 block, a overbored and modified
1.8 block, or a 1.9 or 2.0 block from the US

Look for a cast number about 20mm high on the front of the block, that
should show you the original capacity.

Has the car got a carb or injection ?
Has it got a distributor or coil pack ?
After market or Ford ECU ?

Thanks Jim. I'll have a look at the paperwork, but I have taken over
someone else's project so I don't have much back ground personally. Its a 2L
CVH so probably not very straight forward. I don't believe any UK car was
fitted with them. 1800 CVH in the Sierra was the biggest wasn't it?

At a guess, the rev counter has been connected to one of the 2 coils on

So it's only seeing half the sparks.

You need to connect it to the rev counter output on the ECU.

Tell me what the wiring loom and engine were from, car and year, and i
should be able to tell you what pin on the ecu it is.

          Jim,

My project Bronze Qoupe has a similar but different issue. Standard
clocks but now a 2L EFI engine fitted and it reads at half revs. Either that
or is an amazing engine.............! What do you recommend?

But, wasn't yours a 2+2, hence Mk2 Fiesta instruments which expect
4 pulses per engine rev, just as the Zetec ecu puts out.
It was the distributorless CVH engines (Mk3 Fiesta, Mk5 Escort)
that for some reason Ford decided to connect the rev counter to one of the coil
wires which since there are 2 coils only gives 2 pulse per rev.
They changed the CVH rev counters to match this.

Probably was done as the late carb'd CVH's with the distributorless
ignition didn't have a rev output from the ignition only ecu.
Then they carried that system onto the CVH injection.
When they did the Zetec they went back to normal but with a
dedicated ouput from the ECU, as this wasn't on a coil connection they could
also do away with the suppressor.

I am now confused, when I did the transplant I used the cvh
clocks with the zetec ecu, All I did was connect the output from the ecu to the
old coil wire that fed the rev counter. This gives me the rev readings that I
would expect, idle at just below 1000 etc. Could this be something that varies
with the ecu type?

The CVH engine with the distributorless ignition drove the rev
counter from one of the 2 coils wires..
The Zetec runs it from a dedicated output from the ECU, if you
connect that to the CVH rev counter it will show twice the revs.
If you are still using the CVH main wiring and instrument cluster
then you can switch the rev counter connection back to one of the zetec coil
connections and it will work fine (keep the CVH suppressor in circuit).

What combination of wiring looms do you have now ?
