Just had a check - It was in the CVH rebuilding and tuning manual. It says that the seal should be fitted in the pump and the pump fitted to the engine, after covering the crank end with masking tape and grease to avoid damaging the seal. It also says that chapping the seal into place with a suitable sized tube is a recipe for leaks.

I guess it's worth trying to do it in situ first - worst case is that you ruin a £10 seal and then do it the way they suggest.

When I finally get round to doing the overhaul on my spare engine I'll be replacing the pump anyway, so not an issue at that stage.

I'm not sure why, i've done quite a few of those in situ without problems.

Hi Bill,
If it's a CVH, then the seal is in the oil pump and Haynes don't recommend trying to fit it in situ. If I remember correctly the pump needs to come off and that means removing the sump as well.

Hi, can anyone help with the size of the front crankshaft oil seal I
have 35 x 50 x 7 but don't know if this is right. I have to change the
seal before stoneliegh the leak is quite noticable an I get a few
fumes when it gets on the exhaust. Cheers Bill
