I wonder if thats to do with getting the pump aligned correctly as much as the seal. The CVH oil pump has a small amount of play in it's fixing holes and needs to be aligned centrally on the crank, even (as i'm sure is also in the Haynes manual) if it means there is a step in the joint with the sump. I'm sure the Haynes manuals used to say to fit the oil pump without the seal so you could visually align the oil pump centrally on the end of the crank.

I've never had to tap in the replacement seals on a CVH or Zetec, if you put some grease on the outside of the seals you can push them in with your fingers, the only problem is making sure they don't go in too far so i usually use a small block of wood to press them in flush.

The only time i had troubles with the seals was many years ago when i put some in dry, the friction between the crankshaft and the seal before the oil got to it was enough to damage it.

Just had a check - It was in the CVH rebuilding and tuning manual. It says that the seal should be fitted in the pump and the pump fitted to the engine, after covering the crank end with masking tape and grease to avoid damaging the seal. It also says that chapping the seal into place with a suitable sized tube is a recipe for leaks.

I guess it's worth trying to do it in situ first - worst case is that you ruin a £10 seal and then do it the way they suggest.

When I finally get round to doing the overhaul on my spare engine I'll be replacing the pump anyway, so not an issue at that stage.

I'm not sure why, i've done quite a few of those in situ without problems.

Hi Bill,
If it's a CVH, then the seal is in the oil pump and Haynes don't recommend trying to fit it in situ. If I remember correctly the pump needs to come off and that means removing the sump as well.

Hi, can anyone help with the size of the front crankshaft oil seal I
have 35 x 50 x 7 but don't know if this is right. I have to change the
seal before stoneliegh the leak is quite noticable an I get a few
