Hi,

My H4, was supplied by Old Q as a Kit-in-a-box based on an RS1800 but
sourced from Ford Industrial using an 1800 Zetec of nominally the same spec
but with Escort ECU and wiring harness and 14" wheels. I now have 165 60
R15 tyres fitted, the choice having been made based on calculations such
that the change from 45 profile 14" wheels to 60 profile 15" wheels
corrected the gearing for the ECU expectancy for the final drive ratio with
regard to road speed to engine speed ratio.

My speedometer is now 'spot on' across the speed range c.f. a GPS system.
This combination has given improved low speed torque (pulling strongly from
800 rev/min in 5th), excellent road holding, improved fuel economy and
greater road comfort. It does however require 11 mm wide steering rack
limiters on each side such that the turning circle is seriously compromised
along with some heavy fettling of the inner side of the front wings and the
plastic inner panels but this is necessary to avoid chassis crash on full
lock. At the rear I inserted a 40 mm spacers at the axle end to get the
lower spring retainers away from the tyres and this miraculously levelled
the car at the same time.

There have been no ill effects after ~ 7 years. I now have no problem of
clearance with sleeping policemen whereas previously grounding was not
unusual.

Hamish

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Quantum H4 Suspension/Wheels/Tyres

Hi I have recently purchased an H4 and will shortly be joining the owners
club.

My question concerns suspension wheels and tyres.

The car has a 1.6 zetec engine and is based on a 1995 Fiesta so guess this
is a Fiesta Mk3.5 but I am not sure.

The tyre size is 16/215/40 which just seems too wide for the car, they are
virtually projecting beyond the wheel arches and the rears rub the arches
over bumps.

I don't know what the suspension set is but the front ride height seems on
the high side and the rear is a bit low and the rear suspension seems firm
to say the least! In fact it really is spoiling the car on normal roads, on
the plus side it corners like a go-kart.

I have read that the 'factory set up' was standard 1.6 Fiesta suspension on
the front and 1.1 on the rear, I have do to something to improve the
suspension as a matter of priority,I was thinking about just buying some
standard 1.1 springs/shocks for the rear and taking it from there.

There are also a fair number of alternative suspension manufacturers such a
spax, koni etc. who sell lower/stiffer/adjustable alternatives and I don't
know if this would be better?

Also any guidance on wheel sizes/offsets and tyre sizes would be very much
appreciated.
