I looked at getting some springs made with a changing rate to get the
softness but firm up on heavy loading ( full boot or shock loading )
This opened a HUGE can of worms, , thickness of the metal rod, number of
coils, overall length blah blah blah...
I did try some spring assisters used by caravanners but this still did
not help ( before i noticed and replaced the leaking damper )
I still think there was another issue on the rear there somewhere.
Thinking about it the issue only reared its head after the tyres were
changed from Yokohama A420's to Toyo proxy1r's
Firmer sidewalls ? different width at the tread ? who knows? car was sold.

Thanks to everyone for responding to my question on suspension and
tyres, since raising my query I have realised I made an error, my car
is actually fitted with 205/40 x 16's and not 215/40 x16's
nevertheless these are just too big.
Also since driving the car for a few weeks I have noticed the following:
1. The front suspension is generally OK but when driving at speed over
long undulating bumps it can become a bit 'floaty as if the front
shock absorbers are on the way out. I have not noticed the front tyres
rubbing even on full lock despite the wheel and tyre size, although
the turning circle is poor and so it is possible the power steering
rack may have been restricted?
2. The rear suspension is very harsh and badly crashes over bumps with
the tyres frequently coming into contact with the wheel arches.
My first thoughts are as follows:
3. Buy some 15'' alloys and suitable profile/width tyres to get the
car back to a more sensible wheel and tyre size.
4. Buy some used 1.1 rear struts to try and get back to a 'normal' set up.
I will then take it from there.
Just one more question, has anyone ever had custom springs made for an
H4?
My thought on this is that if I weighed the load on each wheel it
might be possible to get some springs made that are more in tune with
the weight of the car using the standard struts plus better shock
absorbers or possibly suitable coil overs?
Thanks

what's the chassis Q... or reg M254... ???
Looking to hear news of our old one.
Aside from that what suspension is on the car now? standard
looking units, cut off springs?
Adjustable (i guess not) our 195 15 somethings did rub the arches
but only on the tyre wall.
I did change the suspension for new 1.1 springs and monroe gas
struts but it still rubbed.
was only noticeable after changing the tyres, I did not get round
to replacing bushes but what effect this would of had i dont know.
- Jim - what internals do genuine fords have? i think one of
mine was leaking oil.
Based on that look at oil replacements.
Caution on the front struts as MK3.5 1.6 Si have a larger bore
strut than the Mk3
Purple Polyurethane bushes tighten up the handling no end, the
whole handling was fine in my view for every day fun spirited driving.

Hi I have recently purchased an H4 and will shortly be joining the
owners club.
My question concerns suspension wheels and tyres.
The car has a 1.6 zetec engine and is based on a 1995 Fiesta
so guess
this is a Fiesta Mk3.5 but I am not sure.
The tyre size is 16/215/40 which just seems too wide for the
car, they
are virtually projecting beyond the wheel arches and the rears
rub the
arches over bumps.
I don't know what the suspension set is but the front ride height
seems on the high side and the rear is a bit low and the rear
suspension seems firm to say the least! In fact it really is
spoiling
the car on normal roads, on the plus side it corners like a
go-kart.
I have read that the 'factory set up' was standard 1.6 Fiesta
suspension on the front and 1.1 on the rear, I have do to
something to
improve the suspension as a matter of priority,I was thinking
about
just buying some standard 1.1 springs/shocks for the rear and
taking
it from there.
There are also a fair number of alternative suspension
manufacturers
such a spax, koni etc. who sell lower/stiffer/adjustable
alternatives
and I don't know if this would be better?
Also any guidance on wheel sizes/offsets and tyre sizes would
be very
much appreciated.
