Put simply....

The engine depends upon the correct mixture of fuel and air being put in to the engine, being compressed and then ignited by the spark plug.

If you pump the Accelerator pedal whilst trying to start the Car then you run the danger that Excess Fuel will be squirted in to the cylinders of the engine.
The Engine becomes flooded with excess fuel.
And no amount of turning the engine over will start it until the excess fuel evaporates or is removed....

Typically if you took one of the sparkplugs out it would be wet with fuel....

Once the engine is running you can press the Accelerator - the engine revs will increase and the fuel will be burnt. So no Flooding....

Hi. Many thanks for all that information. Ill continue what I don't this morning then. Press the pedal once before starting, turn the ignition on, hold at 2000RPM until it settles down and drive off carefully. As long as I know I can do this when NOT moving and out of gear. I'm just worried, (but your post had reassured me) my Dad said if I apply to much acceleration, over time, I'd flood the engine? I don't know if he's right? Thanks again.
