I know it's a different box, but the principal is the same. On the type 9 I
recently replaced in my Rickman, I google various forums/rebuild info and
supplier's sites, and they said I needed 75/90 GL4 spec. Most places had GL5
and said 'that should be ok it's GL' ...... crikey these people shouldn't be
selling technical items. What will they say next? "DOT5 brake fluid, yeah
that'll be ok with the DOT4 you alrady have, after all it's got DOT in the
description" Anyway, the GL5 has more 'slippery' additives, so MAY not be
suitable. These things are tricky when availability becomes difficult. I got
some GL4 from Wilco as it happens. Comma brand.
I'll dig out the Ford number later today for you.

Fiesta?

Ford changed the spec of the gearbox oil several times for the BC/B5/IB5
gearboxes.
At one point for a couple of years they were even specifying red ATF
(Automatic Transmission Fluid) for them.
I think they were trying to find something that would reduced the failures of
the diff bearings which were very common at the time.
Too thick and you will have trouble changing gear when cold, pretty sure EP80
comes into that category, and the last recommended oil was 75w90
  I think Halfords sell it.

If you could grab the old bottle, that would be great thanks. As I said, I've
never needed to buy any before so I want to make sure it's the right kind.

I thought I had it in my list of parts but unfortunately not. It's a Ford
spec oil, and I can dig out the old bottle to get the number off it for you.
Care needs to be taken with these gearbox oils, as some can affect the syncro
rings (corroding them!) and also never oils have teflon and other additives
which prevent the synchro rings gripping, leading to gear crunch.

      Subject say it all really.

In the middle of an engine change and all the gearbox oil leaked.

I've never needed to buy some before so I've no idea what kind I am
looking for.

      What kind do I need?

      Thanks in advance.
