At one point for a couple of years they were even specifying red ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) for them. I think they were trying to find something that would reduced the failures of the diff bearings which were very common at the time. Too thick and you will have trouble changing gear when cold, pretty sure EP80 comes into that category, and the last recommended oil was 75w90 I think Halfords sell it. Care needs to be taken with these gearbox oils, as some can affect the syncro rings (corroding them!) and also never oils have teflon and other additives which prevent the synchro rings gripping, leading to gear crunch.
