Maybe i'm missing something, but if you normally only put £20 of petrol in then maybe most of the time you aren't filling the tank completely but stopping before it gets full when you reach £20 It may be full enough to show full on the gauge when you get back in the car but the tank isn't totally full. As has been mentioned a completely full tank will cover 50 miles or more before the gauge starts dropping.

What you are seeing now seems to be about right to me.
If you have a petrol can then fill it up and keep driving the car until it gets to the bottom of the red section, then fill it up and see how much fuel it takes. Also note the miles you have done, you can then use the mileage as a guide to when to refill the tank even if you don't trust the fuel gauge.

I always reset my trip meter when i fill up with petrol.
Especially on the 2+2, i use the mileage more than the fuel gauge as an indication of when to fill up.

Somebody told me that Ford specify that the cars must do 50 miles after the gauge reads empty, i've certainly taken a few close to that over the years.

I try and stick to £20 but last time I wasn't looking and it clicked at around
£23/£24. So, as unleaded is under £1 a litre still, 23/24 litres.
