PS a broken spring on one of the gearbox selector shaft detent plungers could
allow that shaft to move sufficiently to prevent the other shaft being moved
(there's an interlock mechanism inside the gearbox designed to prevent, for
example, accidentally going from 5th to reverse)

 Subject: [Quantum Owners] Gear Change

 Hi,
After 5/6 years off the road I have now got my 2+2 MOT'd but am working my way
though a number of teething problems as they come up.
The one that is causing some concern is in respect of the gear change. It
hasn't been good since I got the car back on the road but I went out in the car
yesterday and as I drove it became more and more difficult to select a gear. At
one point I was on the front row at traffic lights and was unable to select any
of the 6 gears that should have been available! That was exciting/embarrassing.
Eventually I managed to 'forcefully' select a gear and get moving but every
gear change after that was a bit hit and miss. Several times I had to pull in
and let traffic past as I tried to find a gear.
I finally plucked up courage to go in the garage this morning and investigate -
and I was able to select all the gears without any problems albeit the engine
wasn't running.
With the engine running and getting up to temperature it seemed to get more
difficult to select a gear although I didn't road test it because of the
problems previously experienced.
As part of the recomissioning I put a new clutch in but I have now noticed a
'whirring' which stops when I press the clutch pedal in. I am thinking that the
clutch is dragging which I understand would cause selection problems.
Should I have reset the segment and pawl at the top of the clutch pedal when I
put the new clutch in?
Would resetting solve the noise and selection problem? From what I can see, or
not see, this will probably require the removal of the dashboard?
Any thoughts/opinions/advice will be gratefully received.
Regards
Phil Holden
