Yes, you should have reset the ratchet on the clutch when it was changed.
Infact, normally you would release it to get the clutch cable off and
back onto the clutch release lever on the gearbox easily.
No need to mess around under the dash, the ratchet can be released just
by lifting the pedal up above it's normal rest position, a lug on the
peddle releases the ratchet.
Either get somebody to lift the pedal up or put a suitable block of wood
under it.
While it's lifted pull the inner of the cable out on the release lever.
Then press the clutch pedal fully a few times to reset the ratchet, you
will hear it click.
There were issues on some of the quantums with the clutch which needed
the pedal box spacing away from the bulkhead with a few washers, also
thick carpet behind the pedal can stop it going down far enough for the
ratchet to work correctly.

Hi,
After 5/6 years off the road I have now got my 2+2 MOT'd but am
working my way though a number of teething problems as they come up.
The one that is causing some concern is in respect of the gear change.
It hasn't been good since I got the car back on the road but I went
out in the car yesterday and as I drove it became more and more
difficult to select a gear. At one point I was on the front row at
traffic lights and was unable to select any of the 6 gears that should
have been available! That was exciting/embarrassing. Eventually I
managed to 'forcefully' select a gear and get moving but every gear
change after that was a bit hit and miss. Several times I had to pull
in and let traffic past as I tried to find a gear.
I finally plucked up courage to go in the garage this morning and
investigate - and I was able to select all the gears without any
problems albeit the engine wasn't running.
With the engine running and getting up to temperature it seemed to get
more difficult to select a gear although I didn't road test it because
of the problems previously experienced.
As part of the recomissioning I put a new clutch in but I have now
noticed a 'whirring' which stops when I press the clutch pedal in. I
am thinking that the clutch is dragging which I understand would cause
selection problems.
Should I have reset the segment and pawl at the top of the clutch
pedal when I put the new clutch in?
Would resetting solve the noise and selection problem? From what I can
see, or not see, this will probably require the removal of the dashboard?
Any thoughts/opinions/advice will be gratefully received.
Regards
Phil Holden
