Phil
Apologies for delayed reply, I accidentally didn't send this and just noticed
it in my Drafts folder...
If you can select reverse gear when stationary without it crunching then the
clutch is not dragging, also it's only necessary to reset the ratchet and pawl
if the bite point is too high and/or you can't press the clutch to the floor.
It should not be possible for the adjustment to be out in the other direction
(too much pedal play and/or clutch not freeing completely) because the
pawl/ratchet mechanism will take up the slack first time you depress the pedal
- unless the ratchet has a broken tooth, which is quite common.
A whirring noise in neutral might indicate a faulty gearbox input shaft bearing
or clutch release bearing, though a small amount of gear whine or chatter is
normal.
Provided there is no problem in the gearbox such as a selector clamp bolt come
slack, the usual cause of not being able to easily find a gear is a worn
linkage and/or worn gear-lever assembly or misalignment of the linkage and the
gearchange input shaft on the gearbox. Near the top of this page might be
useful. With the linkage in good condition it's essential to clamp it so that
the operation of the gear-lever assembly is "in sync" with that of the gearbox.
Best regards

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Gear Change
Hi,
After 5/6 years off the road I have now got my 2+2 MOT'd but am working my way
though a number of teething problems as they come up.
The one that is causing some concern is in respect of the gear change. It
hasn't been good since I got the car back on the road but I went out in the car
yesterday and as I drove it became more and more difficult to select a gear. At
one point I was on the front row at traffic lights and was unable to select any
of the 6 gears that should have been available! That was exciting/embarrassing.
Eventually I managed to 'forcefully' select a gear and get moving but every
gear change after that was a bit hit and miss. Several times I had to pull in
and let traffic past as I tried to find a gear.
I finally plucked up courage to go in the garage this morning and investigate -
and I was able to select all the gears without any problems albeit the engine
wasn't running.
With the engine running and getting up to temperature it seemed to get more
difficult to select a gear although I didn't road test it because of the
problems previously experienced.
As part of the recomissioning I put a new clutch in but I have now noticed a
'whirring' which stops when I press the clutch pedal in. I am thinking that the
clutch is dragging which I understand would cause selection problems.
Should I have reset the segment and pawl at the top of the clutch pedal when I
put the new clutch in?
Would resetting solve the noise and selection problem? From what I can see, or
not see, this will probably require the removal of the dashboard?
Any thoughts/opinions/advice will be gratefully received.
Regards
Phil Holden
