Jim, Bill
Thanks for the note re the spares supply Bill, I may well need it,
although the engine is running pretty well so it's not a case of
fixing something dead. It just doesn't feel quite right.
Jim, the car is H4 GTX which people seem to know about. (It's
currently white, although it was once yellow it seems.)
The ECU is behind the glove box. Nearby are the air bag controller (no
air bags so I assume this is just to keep the management stuff happy),
and the immobiliser box (brown plastic). I took a photo of the ECU and
it looks just like the ones on e-bay (it looks a bit like an
over-sized hard drive), though I cannot see the connector end so
haven't confirmed the ident code. So I think I have located the right
box.
>From your comments, would it be sensible to swap the original ECU with
a Mondeo unit? If so which one? Ideally I'd want to be able to have it
programmed - the car has non standard manifold and exhaust, no cat,
modded inlets, and that's just what I can see. Unless it has been
tweaked (of which I have no evidence, so I'm assuming not), it can't
be running as well as it might and I've read the 1.6Si settings can
blow the 2L engine, though I suspect only if you get on to a track and
push hard!
That said, I assume any compatible ECUs would not have the programming
ports either.
Your expert comments are really appreciated!
I'll check out the MAF and injectors tomorrow.

If you need a replacement ecu, turbobreakers may be able to
help...this is their flEbay user name.Bill

Yes, the diagnostic port is just a 3 pin connector, usually in loom
across the rear of the engine bay. There is also often an identical
connector that is for the octane adjusting plug. If you find a 3 pin
connector with a plug with a loop of wire connected into it, then that
is the octane plug.   Not that it will help you much as it’s pre
OBD standards and will only work with a specific diagnostics code
reader. You can get the codes out with an led and switch but it’s
fun counting the flashes.   The mondeo Ecu’s are still around and
you are lucky your H4 is based on a 1.6SI as thats the only Fiesta
loom that is pin compatible with the early Mondeo 2.0 ecus.   While
you are in the engine bay see what the part number on the MAF is and
what colour the ring on the rear of the injectors is.   Just noticed
you mentioned the ECU is above the glovebox, are you sure thats not an
alarm control box, the ecu is under the drivers side of the dash
(unless yours is LHD) ,  next to the door pillar.   Is your H4 Blue

since been told that the diagnostics port, if it has one, is not part
of the ECU itself but separate and can be located just about anywhere.
Your comments re the ECU being compatible are really interesting. I
guess it raises the question as to what the best solution is. I'm
guessing finding an appropriate 2L ECU is not as simple as it sounds.
But step 1 is finding out what is in there!   Regards

You just need to undo the clamp from under the dash. Then, in the
engine bay undo the M10 bolt in the centre of the big connector and
the ecu will drop down into the car.   The 2.0 won’t run very well
with a 1.6ecu as the 2.0 has a different MAF and injector size. But
that’s the next step , first find out what the ecu is, you are
looking for a 4 letter code that usually spells a word. I think GURU
was the 1.6si code and DEEP, DESK and another 4 letter word begining
with D were the 2.0 Mondeo ecus   Jim        FROM: Julian Coleman

Hi   I'm attempting to get to grips with an H4 which has a 2L
Zetec but I believe run by an original ECU for a 1.6 Zetec (Mk3 Si). I
have found the unit, up behind the glove box where it's not too easy
to get at and I cannot see any labels. I need some practical advice as
to how to gain access - I can't actually see what is going on up
there.   I think I can probably loosen the clamp bolt. But what
happens if I do? Would the unit drop out with its wiring attached?
Where would the diagnostic port be?   Any other info would be
gratefully received.   Regards
