Hi Julian,
              I have an H4 with a 2.0 Silvertop without a top stabiliser 
and have had no problems. I've recently bought a saloon with 2.0 L Duratec 
badged engine and that does have a top stabiliser but was told the the 
engine/gear box mountings were weak, so presumably that is why it needs a 
stabiliser.
