Most helpful, Kasper, although I hope I don't need it.  I have made a 
note.

Inconsistent with the technical specification, which says 0..+5V, but 
consistent with what I measured.

That's most encouraging - although if I get within a few tens of 
microseconds I'm happy!

I don't know now what firmware version mine was, but the recent updates 
have a history:

Changes made from version 3.10 to 3.20:

    * Modified proprietary binary output data format to fix incorrect 
date/time calculation on some Garmin marine products.

Changes made from version 3.00 to 3.10:

    * Improved robustness of internal error handling.

I didn't see any updates for the older GPS18 LVC.
