Maybe I'll try installing midi yoke and seeing if using that helps.
I just may need a new soundcard, though. I don't want to use Creative as
output, because every time I do, all midi output, whether from realtime
input or a midi file, is choppy, while on my other comps it's fine.

Every time I enable acio I get no sound from midi input. The only acio
output I have is m-audio acio drivers or something like that. I use
m-audio as input and Creative as output. Those Creative drivers only show
up in the normal input and output, not in Acio.
One thing I forgot was that playback of midi files doesn't work any better
than midi input. It's funny, on other computers which run synthfont, I
just get a small delay of about a second or so and then the file plays
fine. No matter how I adjust buffering on this computer, that is not
happening.
I normally turn speech off in Jaws when playing midis or using midi input,
because it just says random numbers which I don't want to hear all the
time.
Are you referring to a specific VST host? Which do you recommend I use for
Synthfont?

I think ASIO would help. Also, take note that buffering in SynthFont is
only for when you're playing a file with the play to speakers option, not
for realtime midi input. Because of this, I would suggest you use the
SyntFont as a VST plug-in, because this gives you a more agile setup. Some
of the things I've done:
Use VST plug-in with VSTHost instead of standalone SynthFont.
Configure VSTHost to acquire very high priority.
Set Very High priority to VSTHost in the task manager (shouldn't be
necessary, but somehow it didn't got set for me).
Set my screen reader's priority to very low, and of late running with no
speech, one doesn't really need speech when recording.
Sometimes, going to engine -> restart on VSTHost helps.
The keyboard itself wouldn't have much to do with the chopping of the
audio or the lag of midi events, at least I wouldn't think so.
ASIO did make a very substantial difference for me. From a quite
noticeable delay, to about 10ms as far as I've been able to measure it
(by quite unscientific means though).
