I remember reading from multiple of Buckley's published materials that
the race issue ended up being one of his greatest regrets at National
Review. The worst aspect of conservative fusionism is that it had to
continue to pander to the far right, with its extreme xenophobia and
racism. The Goldwater election (which Buckley saw as a necessary
precursor to Reagan's 1980 win) signaled the death of the black
Republican.  NR should have taken the same stand against the
supremacists that they did against the Birchers.
