Ernie: What...was the key to his appeal and effectiveness? What was the essence of his message?
Good questions. Not sure that I can answer either all that well. The motivation was seeking justice, of course, but nothing at all would have happened except for MLK's courage. Still, things are not as simple as that. Gandhi's example was crucial, and MLK visited India at one time. There was also the example of King's mentor, Vernon Johns, and the example of the white-led but integrated community in Americus in Georgia. And Rosa Parks was important. Also Truman had integrated the military and King thought that the time was right for the next step. Those were the Eisenhower years, after all, in the beginning anyway. Best I can do at this time. For me, and thinking back to virtually all the believers I have known in my life, it is simply one theme out of many, many Christian themes. Hmm, maybe I’m asking the wrong question. Let me put it another way. Clearly you are fan of MLK. What would -you- say was the key to his appeal and effectiveness? What was the essence of his message?
