Leaving players off would work, although that may fail to prevent playback if you have the settings set up to sync the power state as well. There is just nothing specific in the alarm that breaks sync, for reasons given in the bug report.
I can't personally say anything against a decision made for reasons of not wanting to simply change a feature at the cost of breaking something else. Ideally, it would be great if the players automatically did exactly what you want at all times without having to change settings or make more than one gesture/action.
