This morning, the fade-in function did not work at all, even without any
internet reconnect. Whatever I did, I couldn't get the radio to fade.

I restored the factory settings -> no success.

Then I deleted the player from mysqueezebox.com, rebootet the radio. It
said to have problems with logging in into my account. Did another
factory reset and entered my account information again.

And ...

It worked!

Bottom line:

It has nothing to do with internet reconnects, it seems that the alarm
settings on mysqueezebox.com are interfering with the fade-in
function.

I'm not quite sure which setting broke it, but from now on I won't even
touch any of those settings on the web-interface. Too bad, because there
are certain alarm settings which cannot be entered in the radio itself,
like the snooze-duration, or the maximal playing time etc.
