This is an interesting discussion. I've been in the computer HW & SW business for 40 years, working for some of the biggest companies (& own a small IT company now), so I think that I know systems design.
I can see the approach of using a server for playing radio streams, music, podcasts, etc, but not for a basic alarm triggering function. Keep the selected alarm sounds on the radio (fetch it once from a server when chosen as the sound, if one wants a large library of sounds). Keep all alarm triggering local to the radio. If the alarm is a stream for a network source, then go to the server for that (with a local backup sound available). Speaking of servers. Why do I have to deal with two servers?! Only 1 SB server should be in play for any single radio. If a customer wants to host music by running a local SB server, then use that only and never deal with My Squeezebox. Being a user of a local SB server, I fail to see why MySqueezebox.com should ever need to come into play for me. Keep MySqueezebox.com only for those customers who do not want to deal with running a local server (which may end up being the mass-market audience, should the radio catch on as a general consumer product) On the marketing front, Logitech needs to decide if Squeezebox is going to be a mass-market consumer product, like radios, TV's, MP3 players, or just a tech toy for geeks. Someone is going to win the mass-market consumer space for internet radio/music, but that product will be be rock-solid easy-to-use, right out of the box. Too much of the functionality of Squeezebox is hidden and obtained only from digging through sites like this. Don't take this criticism wrong - If I didn't like my SB Radio and didn't think that it was a breakthrough product concept, I wouldn't bother making these suggestions. Logitech is bobbling the ball right now - I hope that they don't drop it. -- davenva ------------------------------------------------------------------------ davenva's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34191 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77883 _______________________________________________ Radio mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
