Thanks for all the suggestions; I had already turned the automatic brightness settings to the dimmest possible, all the way down, and am using the black digital clock. What ended up working --surprise!-- was reinstalling the firmware and unplugging it and plugging it back in. The automatic dim now goes very dim indeed. I hope I won't have to jump these hoops every month or so.... Thanks again, everyone!
