LMS get updates from the Internet ( mysqueezebox.com servers i think ) they are never included in the installer, fw can upgrade independently of server , sometimes there are several version of player fw during a servers life span.
And I think they worry about download size/speed for all the fw , the Touch fw for example includes the whole server so the server package would be more than twice as big ( personally I think it's ridiculus in 2012 just include everything ) Btw how old are your sb3 fw they autoupdate these days no more press brigthness ? You may have software update turned of in server settings this includes both the server itself and player fw , so a server set to not update does not update anything .
