Thanks for the tips - I will continue to experiment. 

It's odd that this one player/location has a poor signal level as it's
in the room directly above the router - so only a plaster ceiling and
some wooden floorboards in the way. The connection is generally strong,
but something is definitely happening to murder it from time to time
