I totally agree, and I also strongly believe developer/designer code should be in files, version controlled, capistrano (or the like) deployed and not visible to customers; and all customer data should be in the database or the upload folder. That way the code can be updated without affecting the customer data, and the customer is free to update their pages without affecting me. I've achieved all these things without much trouble in browsercms.
