It's worth noting that none of the Rails Camps aim to make a profit, just to cover costs - and it's the venue that makes things expensive. However, with the numbers of people interested, we don't have much leeway on that front.
And if we did opt for a more pared-back event, it'd be the usual crew who would be organised enough to grab a ticket before it sold out - and so those who aren't regulars (read: those who struggle to afford Rails Camps as they are now) would still miss out. That's my guess, anyway. Of course - it's easy to talk things down. Not sure of the best approach forward, though... do we set aside a number of tickets for those on lower incomes? Will companies and others step up to fund those tickets so others can pay a discounted/free rate? -- Pat On 09/03/2011, at 9:53 PM, Ben Schwarz wrote: > Personally, I'd want a more organised 'conference like' event if we're > heading towards the 300 mark, irregardless of what I earn or my status > through my career. > > Every event has been more and more expensive, and from running one I can tell > you how hard we worked to keep the prices down (which I know all the other > organisers have done too). > > Whoever runs a camp wants it to be better than the last one, which is a > really great standard to live up to! > > I'd be happy to have more of a 'back to basics' weekend that was a little > more affordable, because when you're looking at a few hundred bucks for > ticket, air travel, transfers, time away from clients, partners and all the > rest of it—heading over seas for a little more is pretty desirable. > > Having said all of that, I think it should be up to the people who run the > camp to choose how they want to run it. > > ps - Its time for another in Melbourne, right? > > On 10 March 2011 14:48, Mark Ratjens <[email protected]> wrote: > I'm seriously giving thought to showing up for my first ever Railscamp, > especially since it is just up the road from my parents' place ... would be > happy to pitch in to sponsor a student.
