All,

About the uniform issue,
I have noticed depending on where you are from, some people are more into it
than others. The guys in So.Cal may be more into it than the guys in the
other part of the country like maybe one of the districts in the NE region
(no district in particular but only as an example now) Some wear it out of
deference, some where because they want to. Some have to go through great
pains just to get anyone to wear it. Some instances have occurrred when
things like uniform sunday was supposed to happen only two people show up
wearing it in an outpost over 70 people in it. I think that the whole idea
behind the uniform is getting lost from certain aspects. The concept is not
being distributed evenly across the board. There are so many different
variations of it that I have seen that makes me wonder how we even look like
a group at all. Where is our uniform? Our uniform is not only what we wear
as an individual but how we wear it across the board as a group, an outpost,
section, district, region and national entity. Not everyone is reading from
the same pages in the Leader's manual. It is baffling, if not frustrating
to me as to the way that people present boys in these so called uniforms
that look like they got dredged out from some dumpster somwhere.
O.K. now historically, I can think of an instance of where uniforms didn't
match. During the Civil War, Many of the Confederate states didn't always
have the finances available to furnish their soldiers in their traditional
grey uniforms, during the battle of New Market, the Virginia Military
Institute had sent their corps of cadets to fight for the side of the
Confederacy all the way from Lexington. People were not able to distinguish
who the cadets were because many had never seen a VMI uniform before and
towns people didn't know which side they were fighting for, for a while.
Then came the Zouaves. These uniforms almost made them look they were from
the mid -east somewhere complete with feathers in their turbans and
intricate designs on their apparel. The differences in uniform had caused a
lot of confusion during the Civil War because no one knew who was supposed
to be who or where.
When I was in LTC, One of the commanders came up and said that you should
be able to read what you have done in rangers by the insignia he wears. He
walked up to a District official and said thet let's see you have had ANTC,
You have gone on a maps trip, got your pathfinder, you have the silver
cluster, you have your LMA for both courses, you have your LSA and your
Outpost Cmdr award in addition to a hash, silver star and a gold star on
your sleeve. The next question that was asked " You have been around for a
long time have you?" The commander didn't have to say anything else because
the commander's entire RR career was on the guy like a resume. Everything
in it's place. If you show up at your next above outpost level function
looking like slob, do you honestly think people will pay you any mind?
Probably not. Been there done that and got a T- shirt to wear to the next
one.

Just my thoughts,

Iron Mike
