A match can actually kill them where they "lay". The most effective way is to spread vasaline over their exposed body. Since their head is buried, they breathe through their body. If you cover them with vasaline, you cut off their supply of oxygen, and they will back out in order to breathe again, at which time you can then pick them off and crush them senseless.
