I would have to agree on some points. I would have to agree that my
weapon of choice is a PowerPoint presentation but don't let the green grass
fool ya. There will always be a need for the PFC Mitch Silvers' in our
military. Regardless of how advanced our "smart" weaponry get. The same PFC
who put his life on the line for my Father will have to do the same, for my
son and yours. I know first hand that it takes a special person to do what
some of our men and woman do. If and, it is a big if , a draft goes through
it will still be business as usual.I tell you this, more can be accomplished
with people who want to, than with people who have to.

The "duty" you refer to is protecting everything you hold dear, sir. There
are thousands of fathers around the world at this very moment that are
missing their families. I hope and pray that wasn't meant the way I think it
was.I read once " For those who fought for it, freedom has a flavor the
protected will never know."

Last night I heard on PBS the description of a professional
American armed force that does not welcome the *conscript soldier..
or Draftee-
American military does not need anyone on duty who does not want to
be there or shows a negitive attitude.. High Tech equipment needs
trained professionals with hands-on experiance. Draftee's would be
a encumberence.. and in abundence, a danger forceing "make work"
or mindless tasks to keep them occupied<G>
The current US Military is BIG BUSINESS! ..and business is winning war!
*Yet key to any recent action, is the Reserveist-
The media loves to show the reservist transitioning from
civilian life to military duty with heart tugging images of
Mom or Dad leaveing.. children.
I have to wonder what "Duty" would pull me from my role as father?
I susspect- *Reserveist pay is used to bankroll the family in the way
a workingman would pick up an extra job to make the bills easier..
What about Gen-X and the comming wave of citizens out of current
underfunded public schools? What about decaying cities, crime and
a tight job market? How does a young person find their way in this
world?
Warfare in modern times is evolving into something never seen before
known as the "Bloodless war" where our troops use tools to search or
recon by remote control. Aircraft is being developed to substitute
for pilots and withstand extream forces to successfully dogfight
beyond the physical abilities of humans!
In the recent Afgan war- *"global hawk" was deployed over targets to
circle and stand watch for individuals on the ground.. and had the
ability to target and hit them with force! *Who needs PFC Mitch Silvers!
Who needs the raw recruit, that stormed Normandy in '44 or fought
Tet '68?
To me the future Vet parades will be made of GI dog faces soldiers,
but only a few retiree's who can't talk about where they were, what
they did.. or what went on in so many places they can't remember'em!
*This thinking is so prominent, that the "Masters of War" now can
sit back and play domination poker with video control.
*Billions and BILLIONS of American dollars are invested... to build
an exclusive machine of global war-

Let's use those BILLIONS to better our society..
Let's take fresh minds and put them to work fighting crime and
standing guard in our cities. Let's have them work in medical
facilites and serve as Teachers in early childhood education..
Let's have them work on the "Infastructure" in differnt communities
to broaden their horizion's and outlook and fuel the fire to learn!
Let's make it manditory and universal so as to have the "privliged"
mix with the "deprived".. *Let's make the parents THINK about where
their kids are going and proud of what they are doing..
