That's where i was at following RR NTC '96 *I typed on a serch engine "Patrol System" and followed the rabbit down the hole to an essay by Baden Powell founder of Scouting. Any Scout handbook from 1910 is good to read. > > Where can I find detailed information about how patrols and patrol > leadership positions are implemented in Boy Scouts? What ages are > involved, what responsibilities, etc......... > Greenbar Bills web sight is excellent. Rangernet arcives has lots of ideas too<G> *First however.. ask permission of your Pastor *Push him to think... Patrol mindset is different than normal evangelical outreach programs and you need him to be on your side when the boys start to whine to their folks<G> If he's a "Top Down" management guy.. *Forget it! Learn from my heart ache<G> My Outpost won ROY every year.. produced 3 GMA's and camped in cold rain<G> *I survived 4 Childrens pastors and 2 *Senior Pastors in 10years. Building a Patrol system in your group is generational... You start- then start again till it kicks.. Patrol system is a Character exercise with loyalty and trust prime, and not at all a para-military pecking order boondoggle. In general... Patrols work this way: You may appoint a qualifyed boy to be a leader.. but not untill he knows what his job duties are. Test them for leadership by use of a Phone tree to get information out. Hold an event that is advertised only by the "phone tree" Each patrol leader.. calls and invites his patrol members to come. *No parents calling for the boy, the boy calls and talks! Scouts do something that Rangers don't care about at all.. *Scouts know that it is hard for a boy to overcome shyness or fear of talking to people. Boys want to do right but often get shakey when assigned a duty. *They learn self-confidence when they speek out. Try that exercise and let me know yur thoughts.. pard! > > Thanks.... > > Matt Ranney > Senior Commander > Outpost 304 > > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Ace Numer- Uno <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Oct 1, 2003 1:12 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [RR] Partols in Scouts? > > > Speaking as a trained BSA Scoutmaster... and Eagle "Dad" > > The Patrol system is alive and well in Boy Scouts.. > > "Boys telling boys what to do" sounds like a paramilitary > domination game.
