*Just back from a NW Dist. Ranger of the Year event, and have several
thoughts on the subject of the GMA and Royal Rangers in general..
*First-
*If the GMA requirements in the present form are hard to understand..
that should be addressed ASAP before loseing anymore Trailblazer boys
"not to Uth" but to "Life"....
Challengers address that.. *But current Leadership are not fresh and
prepared to exploit the excellent materials.... so it may turn into
a rehash of Trailblazers...
My FCF Chapter pres. shared a story about his Ranger son who challenged
"Cdr.Dad" into working with ranger and *sponsered his "Dad" but came
within one (1) merit of the GMA and gave up!
*Tears swirrled in the eye's as a fine man said:
"I pushed so hard...Cdr.Duane.. I ran him off.."
"he brought me here.. and here I am.. and he don't want nothing to do
with Rangers...It hurts!"
So we have a strange brew of AST boys who have been there done that and
find the transition hard from youngbuck to Lt.Commander...
*It's my opinion, the boys find trouble when they do not embrace
advancement for themselves.. and work to *Please a Man... shortly they
find the Man they sought to please steps aside and they must find their
own way in the world.. alone, with competeing intrests, and choices..
If we work to prepare a youngman for that "Independence Day" ...then
we will see the fruit of the effort fullfilled...
(Dream of standing at your GMA and thinking... *Now What?)
*POINT #2
---------
Ranger Leaders do not Communicate effectively or work in teams well..
Time has created a Ranger culture that is brittle and hard to influence
or effect from being historicly a *personality based, and un-clear as to
the *programs agenda.
We don't listen so well..Train so well, or impliment the *Program and when
relesed from a Training session.. *might not even plan the very next
meeting<G> yet we are sure to sew the patch or wear the "pin" that says we
are Trained and READY!<G>
NTC might better equip a Adult leader by a session on building the patrol
system in the local outpost and the why's and hows to do that task.. *Then
back at the Outpost every Section and Dist. Leader should advance the
thought.... *It's for the boys... The Patrol is important!
*Final point
------------
Older boys need a "High-Adventure" event.
*I'd like to see that, happen for each GMA achiever...
> First, most GMA receivers are NOT commanders kids. Second, the GMA is
> easier to earn now than it was 10 or 15 years ago. Third, the GMA is THE
> pinnacle of awards for us - therefore it should take time and dedication
> from the boys. If rangers is losing kids to youth group, you need to ask
> yourself why. Maybe it's because youth is more active in a variety of
> fields. Maybe kids have outgrown the program.
*I'll agree when Ranger Commanders are appointed to "staff" and paid...
Untill then, the boys must see Commanders with more symithetic eyes than
to serile judgement of "Cool or Drool"
Uth has every right to exploit it's powerfull draw... and it's a fact that
a excellent Uth can reach, teach and keep boys for Christ...
*It's wrong however to then say Rangers is at fault or only a "Little
boys" *program... We need to be different. and we need to be *Great!
> The Royal Rangers is not about the GMA. It's about reaching, teaching, &
> keeping boys for Christ. If they earn a GMA in the process, fantastic.
> Commanders, we need to ask God why each of us is involved with this
> ministry. Our we involved for ourselves, our own child(ren), or our we in
> it for the glory of God?
>
> Jonathan Conti "Lone Feather"
> OP Commander, OP 43, North Carolina
> 1987 GMA
*I won't choose.. because the TRUTH for me is all three plus several more
reasons that *I am proud to be a Commander...<G> WAUGH!
